BECOMING A CONTINENTAL SOLDIER

All students will take this OATH OF INDUCTION before the 3rd day of December 1776:
I, ____________, do swear and affirm, to be true to the Thirteen United States of America; to serve them honestly and faithfully against all their Enemies and Opposers whatsoever, and to observe and obey the Orders of Congress, and the Orders of the Generals and Officers set over me by them. So help me God.
Then the student will sign a muster book, review the Orders for the Firing of a Musket, the firing of a cannon with the gun crew positions, and review the layout of a camp for a regiment, The Art of Encampment. Then, the students will read the about the role of fifers and drummers in the Continental Army. To finish the period, students will look at Baron von Steuben's Regulations for the Order and Discipline of Troops (1779) and 18th century battle tactics.

CAPTURE THE FLAG, AMERICAN REVOLUTION STYLE
The class will line up from shortest to tallest and then divide the group into thirds. The tallest group will then choose their best leader and that person will be "George Washington." The taller group is the British and will wear the red pennies (which of course, are pretty fancy uniforms.) The middle taller group, the blue group, will be the Continental Soldiers and the smallest group, the white team, will be the French. Then Ms. Mac will have the British group show how they are the "highly trained" soldiers. (HISTORICAL ANALOGY: The Continental Army was much smaller and less experienced than the British military. However, George Washington, an experience leader, was the commander-in-chief of the Continentals.) Of course, there will be no "puppy guarding" at anytime!!!
ROUND ONE
Two minutes: The red team will start at the tennis court fence and the blue team start in the field with the white team cheering for the blue team. (HISTORICAL ANALOGY: British reinforcements and supplies had to travel across the Atlantic and France sent supplies to Americans early in the war.)
|
ROUND TWO
Two minutes: The blue team will start with a piece of candy. Give an opportunity for two blue team members to earn two pieces of candy to go over to the red team. (HISTORICAL ANALOGY: The Declaration of Independence, Benedict Arnold, and Lord Dunmore's Proclamation)
|
ROUND THREE
Two minutes: Have a brief pep talk and exercise with the blue team because it is very "cold" outside. Add a second flag for the red team to capture. The white team now comes into the game. (HISTORICAL ANALOGY: Battles of Trenton and Princeton, Paine's pamphlet The Crisis, Lafayette, Battle of Saratoga, and von Stueben.)
|
ROUND FOUR
Two minutes: Add a third flag and take away the flag on the red side. The red team has to capture all three flags. (HISTORICAL ANALOGY: Successful hit-and-run tactics used by the American in the Southern Colonies tired out British forces, Battle of Yorktown and Treaty of Paris.)
