The Fall and Rise of China

LESSON ONE: The Fall: The 19th Century "Pain" from Outside and In. 

Preview: Students will get their "The Fall and Rise of China." They will read the following sections:
  • Rural Misery and Rebellion, 1842-1860
  • The Self-Strengthening Movement, 1860-1890
  • Hundred Days of Reform and the Boxer Uprising
​Small Group Discussion: Each student will be assigned to one of six groups (Nian/Muslim Rebellion, Taiping Rebellion, First Opium War, Second Opium War, 19th Reforms, and the Boxer Rebellion) and prepare a summary of each event emphasizing how it contributed to the "fall" of the Qing dynasty.
Heterogeneous Group Activity: In groups of six with each group represented, each representative will summarize and add the events to their "Fall and Rise of China" booklet.

Lesson Two: Beginning the Rise: Remaking China 

Preview: What is "Revolution"? Students will write down the definition from the board and decide whether the five events listed on the board are revolutions or not. 
Background Reading: Students will read "End of Empire 1900 - 1911", "Failed Republic: 1912-1919" and "Birth of Chinese Communisim, 1917-1925."
Direct Instruction: Ms. Mac will present and students will add notes "Remaking China: 1900-1927." 
Individual Assignment: Students need to pick four events from last week's lesson "The Fall" and transpose their events onto an AVID note-taking sheet.
